Building professionals operating under the aegis of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Imo state chapter have proffered reasons why there are many collapse buildings in Nigeria.
The building professionals disclosed this during their 2012 annual conference and general meeting tagged, “Builder’s Document and Builder’s LIABILITY Insurance Act 2003: Panacea for the Building Collapse Problem in Nigeria” held recently in Owerri.
In his address, the Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Building, Imo state, Bldr.Chris Ezeh lamented that it was no more news that the incidences of buildings collapse were taking place almost on monthly bases in various parts of Nigeria without remedy despite the advancements in human knowledge and technological approaches which he said were now available for solving man-made problems in today’s world.
Bldr. Ezeh emphasized that the solution to the building collapse problem could be found in the builder’s document if he was involved in the design and execution process of building projects, adding that qualified and registered builders have the capacity to reduce the incidences of poor quality and building collapse to the barest minimum.
“It is believed that buildings built by qualified builders should not ordinarily collapse. In the Nigerian case, collapse of buildings has been linked by research to be connected with involvement of quacks more than the involvement of qualified and registered builders in execution of building projects in the country”.
Also speaking, the President, of the institute, Bldr. Chuks A. Omeife stated that building collapsed for different reasons varying from natural cause to man-made causes, adding that buildings had no business collapsing as according to him, each time a building collapses, findings have shown in most cases that production process were compromised.
